ATTENDANCE
Excellent attendance at school leads to outstanding education and outcomes.
At Grovelands Community Primary School, we aim for an environment which enables and encourages all children to achieve their best.
For children to be able to gain the most from their education, it is vital they attend school, on time, every day unless the reason for absence is unavoidable.
We expect all students to be aiming for 100% attendance. Helping to create a pattern of regular attendance is everybody’s responsibility – parents/carers, students and all members of school staff.
BY YOUR CHILD ATTENDING SCHOOL EVERY DAY IT WILL SUPPORT YOUR CHILD WITH:.
- Achieving their best academically
- Developing and maintaining friendships
- Becoming an active member of the school community
- Building their confidence and self-esteem
- Establishing a good work ethic
To help us all to focus on this the school will:
- Give parents and carers details on attendance in our termly school newsletter
- Report to you throughout the academic year on how your child is performing in school and any concerns around attendance
- Celebrate good attendance by sharing class achievements in assemblies
- Invite parents and carers into school to discuss any barriers to attendance which the school may be able to support with
- Share a range of interventions and provisions for children who may find it difficult to attend school
- Send termly Studybug celebration alerts to parents/carers of children who achieve 100% attendance
What can you do to help?
As a parent or carer you can help by:
- ensuring your child understands the importance of excellent attendance and punctuality
- discussing any problems they may have at school with their class teacher in the first instance
- not allowing them take to time off school for minor illnesses or special occasions
- arranging appointments after school hours, at weekends or during school holidays will help to prevent disruption to your child’s education and to the school
As a student, you can improve your attendance by:
- trying hard every morning to get up and get to school, unless you are really unwell
- speaking to a trusted adult about the reasons why you might not want to come to school
- make sure you get to school on time every day
- aim for 100% attendance
Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA):
The term Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) refers to the severe difficulty in attending school experienced by some children and young people, due to emotional factors.
Within our school, we believe that it is important that there is an understanding and awareness of EBSA indicators, so that pupils at risk of EBSA can be identified as early as possible so that effective support can be put in place. See our Attendance Policy for further information.

SENIOR ATTENDANCE CHAMPION
At Grovelands Community Primary School we recognise that promoting school attendance is the responsibility of our whole staff team, and our strategy towards positive school attendance is underpinned by our robust school procedures, expectations, responsibilities, and inclusive ethos.
The Senior Attendance Champion, supported by the staff team, champions and promotes excellent school attendance. The Senior Attendance Champion oversees the school attendance policies and ensures that the school fully communicates attendance matters with staff, learners, parents/carers, and external professionals, and refers to appropriate support and intervention mechanisms when required.
The Senior Attendance Champion at Grovelands Community Primary School is Natalia Squires.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
The Attendance Officer meets weekly with the Designated Safeguarding Lead and Safeguarding Strategic Lead to discuss any potential attendance concerns. The Attendance Team meet termly with the Education Division Attendance Advisor, Natalie Greenaway
