Statutory requirements for the teaching and learning of English are laid out in the 2014 National Curriculum and in the Communication, Language and Literacy section of the Early Years Foundation Stage (2014) As a school from EYFS to Year 6, we follow the our ‘progression documents’ to support our long-term planning.

As a school, we have created and developed our own ‘Writing Pathway’ to support teachers in delivering high quality writing lessons. Used alongside the ‘progression documents’, this ensures teachers follow a robust sequence to support the writing process. A ‘hook’ (shared experience, visit, visitor or engaging task) provides the children with a stimulus to hook their writing on. Teachers carefully plan key writing skills and share purpose and audience and ensure children understand who they are writing for and why. Michael Tidd ‘Writing for Purpose’ is used to help extract the features of each text type and signs are used to help the children identify what they are writing. These signs are shared with the children from Year 1 to Year 6.

Each class has an English Working Wall. Key texts, extracts, WAGOLL (What a Good One Looks Like), key skills and modelled and shared writing, is displayed for the children to refer to throughout their writing journey.
