Welcome to Year 5.

We hope you all had a fantastic summer holiday. We are feeling refreshed and so excited to start the new academic year off with ‘It’s all Greek to me!”

We are very much looking forward to meeting you all at the “Year Group Welcome Meeting” on Thursday 4th October in the School hall at 9.05.

Our topic and areas for learning this half term

We will be looking at a variety of Greek myths this term, including Theseus and the Minotaur and The Labours of Heracles.

Rainbow Theatre Visit

On the Tuesday the 2ndwe have a visit from the Rainbow Theatre Company with their “Child in Ancient Greece” Workshop production.

MATHS

In Maths our focus for will be on place value, the four operations (+, -, x, ÷) and statistics.

ENGLISH

We will be looking at a variety of different writing styles this term including, writing in role, writing to persuade and to describe. Children will also be learning spelling, grammar and punctuation skills required by the Year 5 curriculum.

Reading

As well as reading Greek myths within class, children should be reading their AR books every day, at school and at home.

Geography

In Geography we will look at the location of Greece within Europe and in relation to the UK.

HISTORY

In line with our topic we will be looking at different aspects of daily life in Ancient Greece. We will explore the legacy left behind by the Greeks including the Olympics, architecture and inventions. We will also find out about the Greek gods and goddesses.

ART

We will design and make Greek style vases and plates.

SCIENCE

In Science this term we will be investigating forces.

COMPUTING

The focus of Computing in term 1 will be around E-Safety and word processing.

Growth Mindset

Our whole school learning power for the autumn term is Engagement and our character that represents that learning behaviour is the wide-eyed owl, called Barney.

Homework

The children will be given 10 weekly spellings for the whole term on a sheet, which will need to be practised at home. These are from the National Curriculum list of statutory words. Spellings will be tested each week.

Children are expected to read EVERY night for approximately 20-30 minutes. Further information about how to support your child with reading will be sent out on a separate sheet.

We will be sending home a pack of times tables and divisions. Your child should know which one they are currently working on. These will be tested weekly.

A piece of MyMaths homework will be set every week. This needs to be completed online. Login details will be sent out shortly.

Each term it is expected that the children create a piece of homework linked to their topic. There will be a choice of activities for your child to choose from. This will be to develop skills other than English and maths and should be completed by the end of Term 1. Children will be informed of these choices shortly.
