Year 4 Information

All of the Year 4 curriculum information and newsletters

Welcome to Year 4 and the beginning of a new school year!

We are very much looking forward to meeting you at the “Year Group Welcome Meeting” on Wednesday 19thSeptember in the hall at 9.05-9.20am.

If you have any questions please feel free to email us or contact a member of the Year 4 team and we will do our best to help.

We have had a busy few weeks back in school and are delighted with the work the children have produced so far. All classes seem settled and everyone is enjoying our topic and looking forward to our trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace.

In Maths, we begin with a variety of activities planned around place value. Then we will focus on strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems. 99 Club continues and we ask for your ongoing help in supporting the children learning times table and division facts.

Our topic links with English this term. We are using a non-fiction text to research The Celts and Boudicca. Then we will focus on a book entitled How To Be A Roman Soldier. Following our trip to Fishbourne, the pupils will be writing a letter to show their appreciation of the day.

AR quizzing is continuing in year 4 and we thank you for your support with this scheme. Reading with your children, and discussing stories/characters with them has enhanced their success!

In science this term we will be exploring sound. Computing work will involve e-safety and word processing.

P.E. takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure your child’s clothing and P.E. kit is named and that they have a coat with them every day.

Homework

Each week the children will be given 8 spellings, which will need to be practised at home. These spellings will be regularly tested.

We will send home the current times table your child is working on, so you can keep supporting them. Year 4 pupils are expected to learn all tables up to and including 12 x 12!

Furthermore, children are expected to read with an adult every night.

The homework will be given out every Friday and must be returned every Wednesday.

The homework is marked with a star stamper:

1
X1 star is good and equals one house point.
1
X2 stars is great and equals two house points.
1
X3 stars is fabulous and equals three house points.

Learning Behaviour in Year 4

Each term we focus on a different learning power. In Term 1 our focus is Engagement and each class has worked on a set of class rules to get the best out of every day. Our learning partners encourage and support our ideas and we are aware that mistakes are part of the learning process.

It’s ok if you don’t know
But it’s not ok if you don’t try!
